Nourish: What do I feed my Pup?

One of the building blocks of questions! Dry kibble? Freeze dried food? Wet canned food? Human-grade cooked food? Raw feeding? The options are plenty. so what should I consider.

A quick rundown of the options

1) Kibble: Involves a fairly extensive, high heat process. Affordable + convenient option

  • Raw Material Assembly
  • Grinding the Raw Materials
  • Cooking and Extrusion – Cooking at high heat, mixing, kneading, proofing, shaping, and slicing.
  • Drying and Cooling
  • Enrobing – a liquid or powder is added to the outer surface of the kibble to enhance the flavor and palatability of the final product.

2) Freeze- dried food: Relatively expensive + gentle cooking + convenient option

Wet canned food: Relatively expensive + gentle cooking + convenient option

  • Raw Ingredient Assembly and Grinding
  • Mixing and Cooking – Temperature increases so the starch ingredients start to gelatinize
  • Filling and Sealing the Cans
  • Sterilizing the Cans – Heated up to 121°C for a period of three minutes to kill any potentially dangerous bacteria like Clostridium botulinum.

3) Human-grade cooked food: Average to high cost + requires effort and planning

  • Cooked with normal human processes usually done by furparents

4) Raw feeding: Average to high cost + requires effort and planning.

  • The belief is that dogs naturally eat raw food, hence mimicking nature’s diet.

Our personal preference?

Different dogs and furparents have different preferences. Think of it as humans choosing vegan, keto, all meat diets etc!Plus, depending on your budget, availability in your market, schedule demands, furkids allergies, the type of food accessible to you may differ. Even vets, furparents and trainers differ on which type is most preferable.

At the end of the day, its about what works for you and your pupper so let us know your feeding habits!

*Ears up! When trying new foods, to ease your dog into it one change at a time so you can determine any allergies.

How much to feed your pupper?

Most dogs eat twice a day although younger pups, pregnant dogs and nursing dogs can benefit from 3 to 4 meals a day.

Follow the recommended feeding amounts depending on which brands/types of dog food you buy. Adjust amount fed based on Body Condition Score of your dog.
